                 --- Ambient Interactive 4.1 11/19/95 README---

- Bugs known (in descending order of annoyance):
	* Out of memory error in Windows 3.1 when clicking on anything
but "Introduction" in the main menu. This is caused by
the large amount of multimedia resources needed by
ambient. As much as we could we optimized the code, but
get a copy of Win '95 and this bug will be gone. Try
		allocating a larger swap drive.
	* FIXED: Ambient setup reverses the settings for the video and sound
options. If you specify video to be on, and sound to be off,
ambient will play sound, but not play video.
	* On some systems, the background rhythms will not play, even
though the rhythm option is turned on. This is a fault of
		the sound card driver.
	* On some systems, the intro video that is supposed to play the
first time you run ambient does not. On others, the video
clip is shrunk to a small window. This is possibly caused
by flaws in Video for Windows.
	* FIXED: Some sound samples may play even if the sound and rhythm
options have been turned off. Embedded video will play
even if Video option is turned off.
	* After viewing an embedded video clip with sound, the background
rhythm will not return. This bug will be fixed in future
		versions of ambient.
	* When viewing an image that has been embedded in text, the
background may appear distorted. This is caused by
Windows' poor ability to negotiate a common palette
when two or more distinct palettes are displayed on
the screen at once using an 8-bit video mode. Use a
Hicolor or Truecolor video card to get rid of this.
The textviewer will return to normal after the image is
closed. This bug will be fixed in future versions of
		ambient.

- How to install AI4:
	* First download the compressed package from the internet site
                (ftp://ftp.hyperreal.com/zines/ambientm/ambient4.exe;
                http://www.hyperreal.com/zines/ambientm/ambient4.exe)
                or a bulletin board system.
	* Once it is on your computer, create a directory called \AMBIENT.
	* Unzip the package with PKUnZip. You must unzip with the create
		subdirs option (-d).
		Sample command line:
			PKUNZIP -d AMBIENT4.ZIP \AMBIENT
        * Run the file. It will decompress itself and form a subdirectories
                automatically.
        * Make a Program Manager Group (if using Windows 3.1) and Icons.
Consult the Windows Online Help if help is needed.
	* Double-Click on the "Ambient Setup" Icon.
        * Choose the directory or folder where ambient resides.
Ambient will tell you if there is indeed a valid copy there.
Also turn off any unwanted options.

- How to run AI4:
	* Double-Click on the "Ambient Interactive 4" Icon (if using Windows
3.1). This will work only after setting up the package as
                directed above.
	* The Menu system should be self-explanatory. First select the
category of articles you would like to browse, then a title.
        * When in the textviewer, icons may appear. These are multimedia
links which display graphics, sound, applications, text, or
                video when clicked upon.

- If problems arise:
	* Check that you have setup the package as described above.
	* Report any bugs to email: lithium@mcs.com.
